Chelsea Co-Owners Face Power Struggle Amid Buyout Talks
A power struggle has emerged at Chelsea Football Club, with co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital reportedly considering buying each other out.
The relationship between Boehly, who owns 13% of the club, and Clearlake Capital, which holds the 61.5% majority stake, has grown strained since their joint purchase of Chelsea in 2022.
The 50-year-old businessman, initially a prominent figure in the club’s management, has been increasingly sidelined by Behdad Eghbali, a co-founder of Clearlake. It is believed that Boehly has concerns about the club’s recruitment strategy and the lack of progress on redeveloping Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, the private equity firm has no intention of selling and sees its investment as a long-term project. It is determined to continue its involvement and would consider buying Boehly out if he chooses to leave.
Both parties are reportedly exploring the possibility of taking full control, but neither has begun formal negotiations. Boehly would consider selling his shares if a compelling offer arises.
Despite the tensions, all major decisions require mutual approval, and both sides agree that stability is crucial for the club to succeed both on and off the pitch.
